2011 Virginia earthquake traced from sky

The Aug. 23, 2011 Virginia earthquake epicenter and aftershocks. Shown are the main shock (star) and aftershocks (red circles) greater than about magnitude 1.0 recorded through May 2, 2012. It is estimated that there were about 450 aftershocks greater than 1.0 from Aug. 24, 2011 to May 2, 2012.Blobs of solidified magma may have helped control the direction of energy from the 2011 Virginia earthquake, according to early results from an airborne geologic survey conducted in July 2012.
